Significan­t progress seen at Duqm Refinery

The overall progress of the work has reached 13 per cent and this includes engineerin­g, procuremen­t and constructi­on works.

DUQM: Duqm Refinery project is witnessing a significan­t growth in the constructi­on activities made by the three Engineerin­g, Procuremen­t and Constructi­on (EPC) contractor­s.

The overall progress of the work has almost reached 13 per cent and this includes EPC works comprising, excavation works, concrete pouring for foundation­s of buildings and the constructi­on of pipe-rack. A total of 4,769 workers have been mobilised by all EPC contractor­s with 3,275 at site to start the initial works of the constructi­on.

EPC1 Temporary Constructi­on Facilities installati­ons continue at site. Civil and foundation­s works continue at site for civil packages and works continued on pipe rack foundation­s, tanks, pits and roads. Reinforced Concrete superstruc­ture work, foundation works on buildings and excavation­s for undergroun­d piping is also ongoing.

Meanwhile, the progress in EPC2 includes the buildup of the temporary site facilities including warehouse constructi­on and completion of offices. Fencing also continues, as well as excavation­s and foundation works for the main substation 490 and administra­tion buildings.

The constructi­on of EPC3 subpackage (C) work has started with general site clearing blasting and fill works to allow the start of foundation­s for tanks. Furthermor­e, excavation work has completed. In addition to that, 25 cabins and 10 office modules have been delivered and installed for the temporary constructi­on facilities.

Progress of constructi­on

Commenting on the progress of constructi­on, Dr Salim bin Saif Al Huthaili, CEO of Duqm Refinery Project said: “We are pleased to see the progress of work in our project and we aim to deliver it within the allocated time and budget. Once delivered, Duqm Refinery will contribute in boosting the Omani economy and will be a catalyst for growth in the Special Economic Zone of Duqm (SEZD). It will also contribute to the emergence of other industries in the zone and will contribute in creating direct and indirect job opportunit­ies for locals.”

The project has worked a total of 3.7 million man-hours with zero time wasting fatalities or injury incidents. Also, over 1000 safety inductions have been given and 10,000 job specific safety employee training sessions provided.

Duqm Refinery contractor­s for the three EPC packages include: EPC Package 1 (Process Units): Joint Venture of Técnicas Reunidas S.A. and Daewoo Engineerin­g & Constructi­on Co., Ltd, EPC Package 2 (Utilities and Offsites): Joint Venture of Petrofac Internatio­nal Limited and Samsung Engineerin­g Co Limited, EPC Package 3 (Offsite Facilities): Joint Venture of Saipem SpA and CB&I.

The refinery is designed to be able to process a range of blended crude oils and configured as a fullconver­sion hydrocrack­er / coking facility, which will utilize advanced technology, commercial­ly proven at the scale of the project, supplied by leading technology licensors.
