Sumitomo Tyres encourages safe maintenance practices

MUSCAT: It is always important to check tyre tread-depth or the thickness of the rubber remaining on the tyre tread of one’s vehicle. As you drive, the rubber wears down and becomes less effective at controlling your vehicle.

Once the tyre tread is below 1/8th of an inch of rubber, most tyre industry experts suggest preparing to replace the tyres. If the tyre tread is down to 1/16th of an inch, the tyres are considered worn out and require immediate replacement. Driving in inclement weather with such tyres could put the driver and passengers in a bad situation without much warning.

Technically, tyre tread is measured in 32nds of an inch and most tyres start out with 10/32nds or 5/16th of an inch of rubber to grip the road.

To maximise the tread life on a set of tyres, tyre rotation is advisable. It is the physical relocation of tyres to different positions. Front wheels generally wear out more quickly than rear wheels, so rotating tyres from the front to the back and vice versa allows tyres, regardless of position, to wear at a similar rate.

Since Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles have different rotation recommendation, vehicle owners should consult a tyre professional for guidance such as Towell Tyre Care Pro (TCP) with its outlets across Oman.

Tyres are often the most neglected part of a vehicle. Experts suggest that tyres are rotated roughly, every 8,000 – 13,000km during the life of the tyres.
