Rival keeper’s error helps Liverpool maintain winning momentum, Leicester beat Newcastle

-

LONDON: Liverpool can thank Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson for the goal which gave them a 1-0 win away to the ‘Blades’ and allowed the Premier League leaders to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.

There looked to be little danger in Gini Wijnaldum’s 70th minute shot, but somehow Henderson allowed the ball to slip through his fingers and his legs to end up in the back of the net, undoing all the good work his side had done to contain Liverpool.

Liverpool remain top of the table with 21 points from seven games, while Manchester City remain second five points behind as they overcame some spirited resistance from Everton.

Manchester City keeper, Ederson, had a good day in goal on an afternoon when Gabriel Jesus put Pep Guardiola’s men in front in the 26th minute only for Dominic Calvert-Lewis to equalize in the 33rd.

A draw looked to be on the cards before an excellent set piece from Riyad Mahrez 20 minutes from the end put City back in front and Raheem Sterling made the three points secure two minutes from time after Ederson did well to deny Calvert-Lewis his second of the game.

had a rare off day with an error of control which allowed Southampton’s Danny Ings to cancel out Tanguy Ndombele’s opener for Spurs.

However, Harry Kane was on hand to score the winner for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and spare him from answering any further questions about rumors of discontent in the squad.

Chelsea’s Brazilian duo Jorginho and Willian both hit the target as Chelsea ended a good week with a 2-0 win at home to Brighton. Further good news for Frank Lampard’s side was the return to league action of winger, Callum Hudson-Odoi, after several months out with a Achilles tendon injury.

Hudson Odio played the last 27 minutes as a substitute.

Leicester City thrashed struggling Newcastle United 5-0 to move back into third place behind Liverpool and Manchester City and to pile the pressure on Newcastle coach Steve Bruce.

Newcastle’s cause

wasn’t helped by Isaac Heyden being sent off for a dreadful tackle on Dennis Praet, but Leicester were vastly superior to Newcastle and took the win thanks to two goals from Jamie Vardy, Ricardo Pereira and Ndidi, as well as an own goal to pile the misery on the ‘Magpies’. Crystal Palace took all three points from the visit of Norwich City thanks to goals from Luka Milvojevic and Andros Townsend, who capped a lively performance with a goal in the last minute.
