International medical conference organised

MUSCAT: Continuing education and to keep in touch with the latest in the medical field, Muscat Family Physicians recently organised International Medical Conference on ‘Single Stage Both Knee Replacement’ & ‘Obesity Solution – Bariatric Surgery’ at Sundus Rotana Hotel.

Dr AB Govindaraj, Sr Consultant & Clinical Head – Department of Ortho & Joint replacement, M.G.M. Healthcare, Chennai was the first guest speaker.

In his presentation he said for most senior citizens ailing from symptoms related to arthritis of both knees not responding to conventional treatment, total knee replacement surgery is a sensible option. Having both knees replaced on the same sitting under one Anesthesia is safe and has similar outcomes compared to having separate surgery staggered over a while.

Dr Deepak Subramanian, Sr Consultant & Clinical Head, Dept. of General, Gastro, Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery, MGM. Healthcare, Chennai, was the second speaker.

Giving a title of ‘From Fat To Fit’ to his presentation, Dr Deepak said “For those with morbid obesity & also those with the moderate obesity who fail to lose/control weight with conventional methods, bariatric surgery or metabolic laparoscopic surgery is the only & the best option. It also helps in the resolution of metabolic syndrome. Close to 60% are overweight and obese in Oman and those are staggering statistics. Obesity has a direct influence on diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, infertility and also many other problems. The best and the effective way to lose weight and have a resolution of comorbidities is bariatric surgery. The commonest procedures done nowadays are laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastric by-pass.”
