Fishing thrives in Ja’alan Bani Bu Ali Wilayat

Most of the people of these villages work in the fishing sector as an inherited profession and their livelihood

JA’ALAN BANI BU ALI: The fisheries sector in the Wilayat of Ja’alan Bani Bu Ali in the Governorat­e of South A’Sharqiyah is considered one of the most important and most promising economic sectors.

This is because it is one of the pillars of economic developmen­t in the Sultanate for its prominent role in providing job opportunit­ies and one of the most important sources of income.

The coasts of the wilayat enjoy a strategic marine location in the Arabian Sea. The number of coastal villages is more than 22 villages, extending along the coastal strip of the Arabian Sea for a distance of more than 180km. These villages are among the most important marine sites for exporting high-quality fish. Most of the people of these villages work in the fishing sector as an inherited profession and their livelihood, as well as other profession­s associated with fisheries.

Salim bin Sultan Al Araimi, director of the Fish Developmen­t Department in the Wilayat of Ja’alan Bani Bu Ali said: “The department does a lot of work, including issuing and renewing all fishing licenses, collecting statistica­l data related to fishing and export operations, intensifyi­ng guidance and awareness programs for fishermen, and facilitati­ng other services related to fisheries, in addition to supervisin­g the services of more than 5,591 fishermen, 2,846 fishing boats, 199 fishing ships and 670 licenses for fish carriers. ”

He told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the Ministry of Agricultur­e and Fisheries is making a great effort to develop and qualify this vital sector with important projects, in addition to supporting it for the production and export of fish of all kinds, which contribute­d to providing many commercial opportunit­ies for members of the local community.

The Ministry was keen that the employees in this sector should be Omanis only, as it provided them with the necessary support by providing boats, engines and various fishing equipment to keep pace with the developmen­t and progress in this sector.

The Ministry of Agricultur­e and Fisheries has also establishe­d many harbors and piers to serve fishermen and employees in the fish sector. It encouraged the establishm­ent of private fish companies and factories and contribute­d to their support, which resulted in increasing the economic return of this sector to the income of individual­s and employees.

The director of the Fish Developmen­t Department in the Wilayat of Ja’alan Bani Bu Ali added:” The wilaya has more than 30 fish facilities distribute­d over the coastal areas and the center of the wilayat.

The fishing port at the Niyabat of Al Ashkharah is considered one of the most important fishing harbors in the Sultanate. It contribute­s to the developmen­t of the fisheries sector in the Governorat­e of South A’Sharqiyah. It also facilitate­s the movement of ships and boats coming to fish in fixed piers with ease. It also helps to refuel, transport supplies and ice and what is necessary for hunting trips.

The importance of the fishing harbour also lies in attracting investment­s and developing the economic activities. It helps to maintain the quality control of fish by keeping them in the designated fish boxes.
