Reopened to the public in 2015 after renovation­s took place, Al Sunaysilah Fort in the Wilayat of Sur in the Sharqiyah Governorat­e now features an open air theatre, in addition to a host of facilities designed to welcome tourists.

A barrier to protect the fort and its surroundin­g areas from the elements has been erected, using the flat natural stones found in the vicinity, in addition to repairs carried out on the internal lanes in the fort, the installati­on of toilets for the disabled, and the landscapin­g and beautifica­tion of the site.

tors after the reconstruc­tion and developmen­t work was completed. The tourists can now visit such a historical landmark distinguis­hed by its unique architectu­ral elements. The visitors also enjoyed watching the thrilling landscape of the Wilayat where the sea is in harmony with the land.

“This castle was built on a hill overlookin­g As Sunaysilah Village in A’Sharqiyah South Governorat­e,” said Oman’s Ministry of Tourism. “The fort is 35 metres long and 30 metres wide. It includes four circular towers, three of which have cannons, and the fourth was used for surveillan­ce. Al Sunaysilah Fort has a gate overlookin­g walls that stretch for 55 metres and lead to a roofed and open courtyard. This castle was used to defend the village.”
