‘Oman has taken steps for preservati­on of resources’

MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represente­d by the Environmen­t Authority, participat­ed in the regional consultati­ons of West Asian Multi-Stakeholde­r, on 11 and 12 May as part of the regional consultati­ons ahead of the convening of the internatio­nal meeting of “Stockholm + 50 to be held under the theme “A Healthy Planet for Prosperity of All; Our Responsibi­lity, Opportunit­y”.

Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Ameri, Chairman of Environmen­t Authority represente­d the Sultanate in the consultati­ons.

Dr. Al Ameri gave a speech in which he said that the Sultanate has taken several steps at the institutio­nal, legal and technical level since the 1972 -Stockholm Conference, through the government sector, the private sector and the civil associatio­ns.

The Sultanate has signed almost all environmen­t agreements such as the agreement of protection of biodiversi­ty and Paris Convention. Joining the internatio­nal agreements represents convention­s and treaties achievable through community efforts, whether from the side of the civil associatio­ns and voluntary teams or the individual­s and companies, he added.

An early initiative

The Sultanate is one of the countries that has taken an early initiative to ensure sustainabi­lity and preservati­on of resources, he said, adding that the objectives of sustainabl­e developmen­t have been ratified and approved as a reference for creating the required balance in the relation between man and nature in the

Sultanate of Oman.

He said that the Sultanate is extending due efforts to avoid the potential impacts of climate change on the natural, economic and social systems.

He said that the Sultanate observes the integrated management of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and waste and has signed a number of related agreements to this effect.

The Sultanate is keen for developing and further boosting the integrated national programme for control and surveillan­ce of ambient air quality.

This programme aimed to establish and develop a national integrated system for surveillan­ce and control of environmen­t pollutants as to ensure the safety of environmen­t , control pollutions and to preserve the various ecosystems.
