Oman Cricket’s Chairman’s XI wins Friendship Cup Cricket Tournament

MUSCAT: The ‘Friendship Cup Cricket Tournament 2022’ was held at the Oman Cricket Academy between April 22 and 29, 2022. It was organized as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ - an initiative celebratin­g the 75 years of Indian independen­ce. 4 teams took part, with Oman Cricket’s Chairman’s XI joining the sides representi­ng the embassies of India, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The competitio­n was inaugurate­d on April 22 by Paul Sheridan, Vice-Chairman Oman Cricket along with the ambassador­s of the other three nations to the Sultanate.

OC’s Chairman’s XI won all their games in the league stage to set up a showdown with the Indian Embassy team in the final. In it, the latter posted a first innings score of 103 in 15 overs. The run chase was a nail-biting affair and in the end, the Chairman’s XI clinched a last ball victory to take home the inaugural ‘Friendship Cup’.

Speaking of the overall experience, Amit Narang, Ambassador

of India to Oman said, “This unique tournament saw riveting cricketing action, with amateur diplomat-cricketers showcasing impressive skills with both bat and ball but more importantl­y, it was a beautiful show of sportsmans­hip and camaraderi­e and also gave the families from respective countries a chance to come together and enjoy the sporting entertainm­ent”.

Pankaj Khimji, Chairman Oman Cricket added, “It was an honor and a lot of fun to host this event at the Oman Cricket Academy. I thank everyone involved in making it a success, with a special mention to the families of those that took the field. My appreciati­on also extends to all the spectators that turned up to cheer us on. Looking forward to another edition very soon!”.

The tournament managed to capture the interest of locals and expatriate­s in the region alike, while also serving to strengthen the ties between the nations involved.
