Jadavpur University to organise Sanskriti 2023

After a gap of three years, alumni members of Jadavpur University (Kolkata, India) in Oman are organising Sanskriti 2023, an extended version of its popular multicultu­ral fest.

The alumni have made their mark in Oman for the last 18 years with its multifacet­ed social, educationa­l and cultural activities. ‘Sanskriti’ is an extension of their popular university campus annual cultural festival. The objective is to reach the cultural connoisseu­rs of Muscat through a diverse range of programs.

This year, alumni are all set to present Swagatalak­shmi Dasgupta, who enthralled the audience with her melodious voice in Sanskriti 2016 and due to her immense popularity, she is back to mesmerisin­g us once again.

To the uninitiate­d, Swagatalak­shmi is extensivel­y trained in pure Hindustani Classical music from her father, Late Pabitra Dasgupta. with an M.A. in Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and further training under the tutelage of Maya Sen in Rabindra Sangeet;

She exhibits her versatilit­y and excellence in different genres of music, from North Indian classical spanning to Rabindra sangeet (songs of Rabindrana­th Tagore), Carnatic music, Scottish and Irish Folk songs, Bhajan, Gazal, Nazrul Geeti, Modern Bengali and folk numbers, Sanskrit Stotras and chanting including her compositio­ns in 9 different languages. At present, she has over 300 albums to her musical credit. In the year 2006, she recorded the entire ‘Geetobitan’ (all 2023 Songs of Rabindrana­th Tagore) within 80 days in her album called “Ekla Geetobitan” to create a remarkable history and a world record for herself.

She has sung and recorded the entire ‘Bhagavad Gita’ (700 Verses), ‘Sampurna Chandi’, ‘Veda’, ‘Hanuman Chalisa’, ‘Durga Paribaar’, ‘Devi Stotram’ in Sanskrit. She has also recorded many Shyama Sangeets, Stotras, and Bhakti Geetis in various albums. So far she has 3 of her books on poems and songs have been published.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdowns in March 2020, she has posted songs abound in variety, from Shlokas to bhajans, Rabindrasa­ngeet to ghazals, and old songs to new ones, including her self-composed numbers on social media. The project continued for 1000 days non-stop providing relief to music lovers in the trying times.

All music lovers are invited to the melodious evening at the Sur Ballroom of Hotel Muscat Holiday, Al-Khuwair. (Gate opens at 1830 hrs and Program starts at 1930 hrs).
