FIVE MILITANT GROUPS BEHIND TARGETED KILLING OF 9 TRAFFIC COPS: DIG

- STAFF REPORT

AT least five militant groups are behind targeted killings of nine traffic cops and officials who have been targeted on duty since 2015 in different areas of the metropolis, said Karachi Traffic DIG Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh while talking to news agency on Monday.

After the recent killing of traffic official SI Arshad, who was posted as ASO at Traffic Section of North Nazimabad, DIG requested higher authorities for providing abundant quantity of weapons and safety jackets to traffic police as they had only 660 safety jackets for 32,000 traffic constables.

DIG said one militant group had already been arrested by Rangers last year but there was a dire need to arrest the remaining suspected groups involved in killing traffic cops.

“At least six traffic cops and officials had been targeted during 2015 while three have been killed this year which shows that militant groups have become active in targeting traffic officials,” the DIG said.

“The best prevention is the best protection so proper investigation into the killings so far and arrest of culprits behind their killing could stop these incidents,” he said.

DIG said traffic police were soft targets of the criminals as they work at crowded area of the public places to regulate traffic in the city and they could be targeted easily. The criminals could easily escape the scene after killing any traffic cops.

He requested Sindh Rangers DG and AIG Counter Terrorism Department to take special measures to stop killing of traffic cops and officials in the city.
