Zelenskyy: Russia planning attacks with Iran-made drones

- KYIV, UKRAINE

Russia is planning to launch a long-term campaign of attacks against Ukraine using Iranian-made drones in an effort to demoralize and “exhaust” the war-weary country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, citing intelligence reports.

During his nightly address on Monday in Kyiv, the Ukrainian president said he received intelligence indicating that the attacks would be carried out using Iranian-made Shahed drones.

“We must ensure - and we will do everything for this - that this goal of terrorists fails like all the others,” the BBC quoted Zelenskyy as saying.

“Now is the time when everyone involved in the protection of the sky should be especially attentive.” He claimed that Russia aims to “exhaust” Ukraine through a sustained wave of drone attacks and called on those responsible for protecting the sky to be vigilant.

This news follows Ukraine’s announcement that it had carried out a strike which it claimed killed 400 Russian soldiers in the occupied Donbas region. Russia admitted that the attack killed 63 of its troops, a rare acknowledgement of battlefield losses. However, neither claim has been verified.

Kremlin critics have accused Russian authorities of downplaying losses on the battlefield in Ukraine. Russian military bloggers said several hundred troops could have died as a result of the strike in Makiivka.

Former Russian separatist leader Igor Strelkov said he received a report about the strike about 1 a.m. on January 1 (2300 GMT on December 31). He said “hundreds” have been killed and wounded, adding the Ukrainian army struck a facility that housed mobilized troops.

Russia has recently increased its drone strikes on Ukraine, targeting cities and power stations across the country over the past three nights. Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian air defenses had shot down more than 80 Iranianmade drones in the opening days of 2023.

Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for several months, destroying power stations and leaving millions without power during the country’s winter. An alert was in effect for Kyiv on Monday after an “air attack,” the city’s military administration announced, with the mayor citing an explosion in one district that left one person injured.

Monday’s early morning attack comes after a New Year assault by Russia that saw Kyiv and other cities under fire from missiles and Iranianmade drones. The warning from Kyiv’s military administration came just after 1 am local time (2300 GMT).

“Air attack on Kyiv... Air alert is on in the capital,” it announced on the messaging app Telegram. The city’s military administration head, Serhiy Popko, called for people to “stay in shelters”. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported an explosion in Kyiv’s northeastern Desnyanskyi district and said “emergency services are on their way.”

“An injured 19-year-old man was hospitalized in the Desnyanskyi district of the capital,” he said around 1:20 am.
