In yet an­other long-de­layed se­quel to a cult favourite, the 1990 techno-thriller Flat­lin­ers is get­ting a hi-tech follow-up. The orig­i­nal starred Ju­lia Roberts, Kevin Ba­con and Kiefer Suther­land, but only the lat­ter 24 hero re­turns in this mod­ern update from Dan­ish di­rec­tor Niels Ar­den Oplev ( The Girl with the Dragon Tat­too).

De­spite 27 years since the first one be­came a box of­fice smash, the story re­mains more or less the same. The new cast of will­ing par­tic­i­pants to Flat­lin­ers’ warped med­i­cal ex­per­i­ment in­clude Ellen Page ( Juno), Nina Do­brev ( The Vam­pire Di­aries) and Diego Luna ( Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).

Five doc­tors at­tempt to dis­cover what hap­pens after a per­son dies, risk­ing their lives to find out what is on the other side of death. As these guinea pigs grow in­creas­ingly brazen with their deadly tests, they dis­cover that their brains are ef­fec­tively be­ing rewired, and they are also bring­ing back some­thing sin­is­ter with them to the world of the liv­ing, and the bar­rier be­tween the liv­ing and the dead be­gins to shift. The hor­rors found in

Flat­lin­ers prom­ise to thrill fans of the orig­i­nal and to bring in new fans who won’t be fa­mil­iar with the film’s death-de­fy­ing stunts.
