Impeachment kay Sereno pinagtibay

Nakitaan ng House Committee on Justice kahapon ng sapat na batayan para ipursige ang impeachment ni Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Susunod na tatalakayin ng House panel ang pagtukoy sa probable cause sa paghahain ng kasong impeachment na naglalaman ng 27 alegasyon na sumusuporta sa mga batayan ng culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft at iba pang matataas na krimen, na nakasaad sa reklamo ng complainant na si Atty. Lorenzo Gadon.

Sa botohang 25 ang pumabor at 2 ang kumontra, inaprubahan ng komite ang mosyon na iprinisinta ni Misamis Occidental Rep. Henry Oaminal, justice panel chairman, na nagdedeklarang mayroong sapat na batayan para tukuyin ng mga mambabatas ang kasalanan ni Sereno.

Sina Liberal Party Reps. Christopher Belmonte (Quezon City) at Kaka Bagao (Dinagat Island) ang mga tanging kumontra sa impeachment.

Kapwa hindi dumalo sina Gadon at Sereno sa impeachment proceedings.

Sa dalawang oras na deliberasyon, itinuring din ng House panel na pinamumunuan ni Mindoro Oriental Rep. Reynaldo Umali na “mere scrap of papers” ang dalawang liham na ipinadala ni Sereno.

“These look like scrap of papers to me,” sabi ni Majority Leader Rodolfo Farinas. “Why are we discussing this piece of paper?”

Ipinaliwanag nina Deputy Speaker at Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro at Leyte Rep. Vicente Veloso na susundin ng komite ang mga panuntunan na huwag nang payagan ang mga abogado ni Sereno na magsagawa ng cross examination.

“Clarificatory questions, not cross examination, is allowed. In the case of impeachment and other committee deliberations in Congress, lawyers are not allowed to speak as provided by the rules,” diin ni Castro.
