Duterte admin umaasa sa ‘good faith’ ng China sa WPS

Muling ipinahayag ng Malacañang na patuloy na susuklian ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas ang “good faith” ng China at iginiit ng Palasyo na walang itinatayong bagong reclamations ang Asian giant sa pinagtatalunang bahagi ng South China Sea.

Ito ang reaksiyon ni Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque matapos iulat ng isang pambansang pahayagan na halos nakumpleto na ng China ang militarisasyon nito sa mga itinayong artipisyal na isla sa pinag-aagawang karagatan.

Sa press briefing, sinabi ni Roque na walang bago sa inilathalang ulat dahil ang mga sinasabing aktibidad ay ginagawa na sa isla bago pa man maupo sa puwesto si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.

“Those islands were reclaimed during even the time of the former administration. They were completed, in fact, during the time of the previous administration. And I think, whether or not we like it, they intended to use them as military bases,” ani Roque kahapon.

“Our position is anything found in those islands were already there when the President took over. And let’s not talk about militarization that happened under the Duterte administration, if there is such a militarization which China denies,” dugtong niya.

Ayon kay Roque, walang magagawa ang gobyerno sa mga aksiyon ng China sa West Philippine Sea (WPS) maliban sa umasa sa pangako ng China na hindi na sila magre-reclaim ng mga bagong isla sa pinagtatalunang karagatan.

“So what do you want us to say? All that we could do is to extract a promise from China not to reclaim any new artificial islands,” aniya.

“If the Aquino administration was not able to do anything about these artificial islands, what do you want us to do? We cannot declare war. If you have suggestions on what to do, let me know,” dagdag niya.

Naniniwala rin ang opisyal ng Palasyo na hindi sinisiil ng China ang freedom of navigation sa mga pinagtatalunang bahagi ng dagat sa kabila ng armas ng China sa mga nireclaim na isla.

Idinagdag niya na marahil ay ito talaga ang intensiyon ng China na gamitin o maglagay ng military hardware bago pa man pumasok ang administrasyong Duterte.

“What can we do? Right now, the position of the President is maintain close ties so they wouldn’t have any reason to use those arms in those islands,” dugtong niya.

Iginiit ni Roque na hindi inuupuan ng Malacañang ang isyu at tiniyak sa publiko na mahigpit na binabantayan ng gobyerno ang mga kaganapan sa West Philippine Sea.

“I get briefings and I can tell you we know which ships are plying where. We know about the work. But the question is, what can you do?” aniya.

“We continue relying not only on the principle of good faith…We expect that China, being not just a member of the United Nations but also a permanent member of the Security Council, will adhere to the prohibition on the use of force,” patuloy niya.
