Tobacco control, pinaigting ng WHO
INILUNSAD ng World Health Organization (WHO) ang global strategy nitong Sabado para palakasin ang tobacco control agenda sa mga susunod na taon, at upang palawigin pa ang pagpapaunti ng mga sakit na nararanasan ng publiko, na dulot ng pagkonsumo ng tabako.
Layunin ng estratehiya, na may titulong Medium-Term Strategic Framework (MTSF), na patatagin ang implementasyon ng WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC), na gagabay naman sa convention parties, secretariat at iba pang stakeholders, tungkol sa tobacco control simula 2019 hanggang 2025.
“The adoption of this strategy marks a key milestone in strengthening the FCTC,” lahad ni Dr. Vera Luiza da Costa e Silva, pinuno ng WHO FCTC Secretariat. “This strategy provides a very clear path forward, with priorities and objectives to reinforce government policies and accelerate global action for more effective implementation of the tobacco control treaty.”
Ang estratehiya ay nabuo sa ikawalong session (COP8) ng FCTC, na dinaluhan ng 1,200 participants, kabilang ang mga delegado mula sa 148 grupo ng global tobacco control treaty at kinatawan ng UN agencies, iba pang intergovernmental organizations, at civil society.
Napagkasunduan din nilang i-maximize ang transparency upang protektahan ang mga FCTC related session at proceeding mula sa impluwensiya ng mga tobacco industry representatives at interests.
“More than ever, we need to stay the course and strengthen our commitment to ensure that FCTC efforts to protect and promote public health and sustainable development are not hijacked by the tobacco industry,” ani Dr. Vera Luiza. “We must yield no ground to the tobacco industry.”
Upang lalong hindi pangunahan o guluhin ng tobacco industry ang mga public health policy, inatasan ang mga partido na protektahan ang mga national public health policy “from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry.”
Bilang natatanging global intergovernmental meeting na nakatuon sa tobacco control, ang FCTC COP na ang lumikha ng mga polisiya at siya ring nagpatupad nito, gayundin ang “adoption of implementing mechanisms by the parties to the convention”.
