Arrest warrant kay Imelda, ipinagpaliban

Ipinagpaliban ng Sandiganbayan Fifth Division ang inaantabayanang pag-aresto kay Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos habang sinisikap ng mga abogado ng dating First Lady na maiapela ang hatol dito na hanggang 77 taong pagkakakulong dahil sa graft.

Ito ang sinabi ni Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang nang tanungin kung kailan ipatutupad ng anti-graft court ang hatol laban kay Marcos.

“I just learned that the Court has deferred release of the warrant of arrest because the lawyer of Mrs. Marcos filed a motion [nitong Lunes] asking leave of court to avail of remedies and deferment of issuance of warrant. The motion is set for hearing on Friday, November 16,” saad sa text message ni Tang.

“Ordinarily, an accused who has been convicted of a bailable offense may still be granted bail pending appeal which is addressed to the sound discretion of the court,” dagdag pa ni Tang.

Sa isang pahayag, sinabi ng bagong abogado ni Marcos, si dating Court of Appeals Justice Manuel Lazaro, na nakapaloob sa kanilang mosyon ang “justifiable reasons” na magpapaliwanag sa hindi pagdalo ni Marcos at ng isa pa nitong abogado, si Atty. Robert Sison, sa promulgation nitong Biyernes.

Dagdag pa ni Lazaro, ang kanilang mosyon “prayed, among others, that the issuance of the warrant of arrest be deferred, or if already issued, to defer the implementation. The motion is intended to restore whatever rights that have been prejudiced resulting from their absence.”

Ang pitong bilang ng graft laban kay Marcos ay inihain noong 1991, at nag-ugat sa “direct and indirect financial or pecuniary interest” niya sa pangangasiwa sa ilang nongovernment organization (NGO) na binuo sa Switzerland simula 1968 hanggang 1984, o sa termino ng asawa niyang si dating Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos.

Noong nakaraang buwan, naghain ng kandidatura si Marcos, 89, para kumandidatong gobernador ng Ilocos Norte sa susunod na taon.
