Australia, bansa sa Oceania, lalaro na sa Asian Games basketball
BANGKOK — Hirap nang matinag ang China, Japan at Korea, nadagdagan pa ng sakit ng ulo ang Philippine basketball Gilas Team.
Ipinahayag ng Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) nitong Lunes (Martes sa Manila) matapos ang isinagawang general assembly meeting ang pagbubukas ng pintuan sa Australia at iba pang bansa sa Oceania para makalahok sa basketball, volleyball at soccer event sa 2022 Asian Games sa Hangzhou, China.
Ayon kay Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates, matagal na umanong naglo-looby ang Australia na mapasama sa Asian Games na itinatag at unang isinagawa sa India noong 1951.
Nilinaw niya na limitado lamang sa sports na volleyball, beach volleyball, soccer, fencing at basketball ang imbitasyon ng OCA sa Oceania athletes.
“Australia is very grateful for this opportunity ... and there will be enormous interest from our Oceania neighbors,” pahayag ni Coates.
“There’s a cap of 10,000 athletes for these games so there will need to be some decisions made along the way about which Australian men’s and women’s team will compete, but the critical thing is our place is confirmed for Hangzhou 2022 and that’s a very positive outcome for us.”
Nakalahok ang Australian athletes sa 2002 East Asian Games sa Osaka, Japan, ngunit hindi sila kasama sa medalya. Naimbitahan din ang Oceania athletes sa Asian Winter Games at Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
“This has been quite a journey that ultimately will benefit athletes in this region,” sambit ni Coates.
Ang Oceania National Olympic Committees ay binubuo ng 17 bansa sa kabuuan ng Pacific.
Muli namang naihalal si Sheikh Ahmad ng Kuwait bilang pangulo ng OCA, sa kabila nang nakabinbin na kasong forgery sa isinampa laban sa kanya sa Switzerland. Sabit din siya sa isyu ng panunuhol sa sa mga opisyal ng Asian football na kasalukuyan nakabinbin sa U.S. Department of Justice.
Itinanggi ng sheikh ang mga paratang, ngunit sinuspide niya ang sarili nitong Nobyembre bilang miyembro ng International Olympic Committee (IOC) at pangulo ng Asian Olympic Committee (ANOC). INiwan din niya ang FIFA nitong 2017.
“I made it clear to the NOCs that I would leave it up to them to decide whether I should stand for president,” pahayuag ni Sheikh Ahmad. “I am here to serve them and I was humbled by their response.”
