Kaya natin gawin pareho: WHO

NANINIWALA ang World Health Organization na sa halip na sumuko sa pagkontrol ng virus, kaya ng mundo na gawin ang mitigation at pagkontrol sa pandemya.

Ang pahayag na ito ay isang komento sa naging tila tugon isang araw matapos sabihin ng chief of staff ni US President Donald Trump, si Mark Meadows sa CNN na nakatuon na ngayon ang administrasyon sa pagpapagaan ng epekto (mitigation), at hindi ang pagpigil sa virus.

“We’re not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigations,” pahayag ni Meadows, na ikinumpara ang nakamamatay na COVID-19 sa seasonal flu.

Nang matanong sa naging komento ni Meadows, sumangayon si Tedros na ang pagtutok sa mitigation, lalo na sa proteksyon sa mga pinakananganganib ay mahalaga. “But giving up on control is dangerous,” paalala niya.

Iginiit ni Tedros na ang mitigation at pagkontrol sa pandemya “were not contradictory. We can do both.”

Bagamat may responsibilidad ang pamahalaan na siguruhin ang mga bagay tulad ng testing at contact tracing, idiniin niya na may responsibilidad ang bawat isa sa pigilan ang pagkalat ng COVID19.

“Governments should do their share and our citizens should do their share, to do everything to minimise transmission,” aniya.

“There aren’t magic solutions to this outbreak,” giit pa ng WHO chief.

“No one wants more so-called lockdowns. But if we want to avoid them, we all have to play our part.”

Naniniwala rin si WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan na ang mga bansa ay “not give up on trying to suppress transmission.”

“There were many places in the US and elsewhere that had a lot of trouble back in March and April using mitigation,” aniya.

“When our emergency rooms were overwhelmed and we were rolling freezer trucks up to the back of hospitals, that’s the reality of mitigating a disease in the face of a tsunami of cases.

“You run out of capacity to cope. And that is the fear right now.”

EUROPE BILANG ‘EPICENTRE’

Nagpahayag din siya ng partikular na pagkabahala sa sitwasyon ngayon ng Europe, na nitong nakaraang linggo ay pinagmulan ng 46 porsiyento ng buong kaso ng mundo, at halos sangkatlo ng kabuuang pagkamatay.

“There’s no question that the European region is an epicentre for disease right now,” pagbabahagi ni Ryan.

Nagpahayag din si Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead on the pandemic, ng pag-aalala sa kalagayan ng Europe—partikular sa bugso ng hospitalisasyon at mabilis na pagkapuno ng mga intensive care units.

“In many cities we’re seeing beds filling up too quickly, and we’re seeing many projections saying the ICU beds will reach capacity in the coming days and weeks,” pagbabahagi niya sa briefing nitong Lunes.

Gayunman, nagpahayag din si Van Kerkhoveng optimismo, sa pahayag na “countries across Europe brought transmission under control in the springtime into the summertime, with case numbers at very low levels.”

“They can do this again,” aniya, sa pagdidiin na batid naman ang panuntunan na kailangan upang mahinto ang pagkahawa.

“The other option is if we don’t quarantine contacts of known cases, then everyone’s going to have to be in quarantine—and that’s what we want to avoid.”
