BBC World News ops sa China, ipinatigil

BEIJING (AFP) — Pinagbawalan ng broadcasting regulator ng China noong Huwebes ang BBC World News, na inakusahan nito ng paglabag sa mga patakaran matapos ang isang kontrobersyal na ulat tungkol sa pagtrato nito sa Uighur minority ng bansa.

Ang desisyon ay dumating ilang araw lamang matapos na bawiin ng sariling regulator ng Britain ang lisensya ng broadcaster ng China na CGTN para sa paglabag sa batas ng UK tungkol sa pagmamay-ari na sinusuportahan ng estado, at pinukaw ang galit na mga akusasyon ng censorship mula sa London.

Sa isang gabing pahayag, sinabi ng National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) ng Beijing na nag-ulat ang BBC World News tungkol sa China ay napatunayang “seryosong nilabag” ang mga alituntunin sa pag-broadcast.

Kasama rito ang “the requirement that news should be truthful and fair” and not “harm China’s national interests”.

Ang NRTA “does not permit the BBC to continue broadcasting in China, and does not accept its new annual application for broadcast”, dagdag nito.

Sinabi ng BBC na “disappointed” ito sa hakbang, na nalalapat sa mainland China, kung saan ang channel ay naka-censor at restricted sa international hotels.

“The BBC is the world’s most trusted international news broadcaster and reports on stories from around the world fairly, impartially and without fear or favour,” sinabi ng BBC spokeswoman.

Tinawag naman ni UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab ang ban na “an unacceptable curtailing of media freedom”.

“China has some of the most severe restrictions on media and internet freedoms across the globe, and this latest step will only damage China’s reputation in the eyes of the world,” dagdag.
