A fulfilled salesman

- By Erika Denise L. Dizon

“It gives me selffulfillment when I am able to help my clients realize their life’s aspirations and prepare for the uncertainties of the future.”

PRIOR TO becoming part of Insular Life’s cream of the crop fi nancial advisers, Arslie M. Malipero was an ordinary salesman. Unbeknown to him was an arduous journey ahead when he first stepped on the office doors of the Filipino life insurance company in 1996. Although challenging, Mr. Malipero said it has been a fulfilling 20 years. In an e- mail to BusinessWorld, he said, “It gives me self- fulfillment when I am able to help my clients realize their life’s aspirations and prepare for the uncertainties of the future.” He shared that Insular Life has been supportive in his professional growth and development. “The company encourages continuous learning by offering training programs to its fi nancial advisers. Insular Life also provides business tools which help me in my conduct of business.” Being a financial adviser to one of the leading life insurance companies in the country also has its perks and bonuses. Mr. Malipero shared that apart from the job’s financial rewards that keep him motivated and

productive, he also gets to travel abroad often and for free.

“Unlike regular employment, I also decide on how I spend my time and I dictate my income. Being a financial adviser allows me to pursue continuous learning for my professional development,” the 16-time Million Dollar Round Table ( MDRT) member said. MDRT is a prestigious association of financial professionals from all over the world.

Recently, Mr. Malipero was recognized as Underwriter of the Year for production year 2015 — a great feat for people working in the same industry. In spite of his professional achievements, he shared that a major test as financial adviser is to constantly look for effective ways to manage his growing client portfolio.

The only solution, he explained, was to thoroughly select and devote more time with his clients who have a need for financial advice and guidance.

Mr. Malipero also does frequent plan reviews to keep his clients’ portfolios up-to-date.

“I have been in this business for years now and one of the challenges that I also face is being able to keep myself motivated and maintain that high level of energy,” he added. To do this, Mr. Malipero engaged himself in various physical activities such as basketball, biking, and swimming.

Just recently, he participated in the 2016 Cobra Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship. “As a financial adviser, it is also important for me to practice a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Asked what advice he could give to future fi nancial advisers, he encouraged aspirants to not go astray but instead focus on a certain goal and on things that will help them succeed in their careers.

“Focus on important things that will lead you to your goal,” he said.

Mr. Malipero added that it is indeed normal for neophytes to struggle on their production. He noted that, even after two decades, his constant struggle is to find more ways and means to overcome frustrations and rejections.

Keeping the fire burning for his job could be difficult, but giving up is not an option. Always on the go and selling, he believes that he is able to help a client whenever he seals a deal.
