War Dogs
A PAIR of twentysomethings (Jonah Hill and Miles Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on US Military contracts. The pair gets in over their heads when they land a multi-million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military — puts them in business with some very shady people. Directed by Todd Phillips, the film has gotten mixed reviews. “At best, War Dogs is a missed creative opportunity; at worst, it’s a quasi-celebration of two vile schemers, one that ignores the brutality of the world they capitalized on,” writes David Sims of The Atlantic. On the other hand, Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times sees the film as “[A] solid example of the Sobering Comedy, where we laugh consistently at the madness onscreen, all the while lamenting how it’s rooted in real-world reality.”
