Porsche credits Leipzig plant for Macan’s production success

-

PORSCHE CARS said its Macan crossover model, introduced in 2014, has been a “phenomenal success” for the brand as more than 150,000 examples of it have already rolled out of the company’s assembly line in Leipzig, Germany. Porsche added the Macan “contributes substantially” to its business in Asia Pacific.

The car maker credited the model’s success in part to the Leipzig manufacturing facility itself, saying it is “considered to be one of the most modern and sustainable automotive factories in the world.”

Porsche said that Leipzig, 387 robots perform about 6,000 welds to form the vehicle’s 500-kilogram body. After this, the car’s doors, interior, under body, exterior, chassis and power train components are put together. It then takes around 15 hours for one of the cars to run through all phases of the paint shop. Meanwhile, the final assembly process involves installing various driver assistance systems and fine-tuning the chassis.

The last steps call for starting up the engine, examining the body for leaks, and taking the car for a drive on the test track. A final inspection completes the Macan’s assembly process, according to the car maker.

Porsche added that besides being a factory, the Leipzig plant is also a treat for car enthusiasts as it has a racing circuit and off-road driving course.
