Learning and growth

In the autumn of life, one glances back to see the hills and valleys traversed and one moves on — a little older and wiser.

We all go through the paths of growth. There are the first steps, primary school then the struggles of adolescence until graduation. As we reach adulthood, there are decisions about university, post graduate courses, the choice of jobs, career, or a starting a business.

It is a fast-spinning, changing world that we and the younger generation have to adapt to, and live in, to survive.

Challenges come in the form of work pressures and stress. Decades ago, it used to be simple, innocent, less complicated. One hurdles many obstacles. One falls and fails before one learns to walk and stride forward. Then one gains experience and achieves goals at work. There are some forks on the road and difficult choices ahead.

On another level, there are many opportunities for travel adventures and explorations. These trips open one’s eyes and mind to different cultures and perspectives. It is the time to try and taste new flavors, textures, and sensations. Climbing mountains, camping in the desert, swimming, paragliding, kiteboarding, skiing. Learning a new language and living away from home.

There are several personal milestones — falling in and out of love, finding the right partner, nurturing friendships and relationships; starting and raising a family with its joys and problems.

The learning and growth process is continuous, endless.

By midlife, an individual shall have experienced the waxing and waning moons; thousands of sunrises and sunsets; thunderstorms and some blissful moments of serenity.

There shall have been failures and upheavals, devastating heartbreaks, crises, tragedy, and painful, searing losses. There shall have been promotions and triumphs in the professional field.

In the autumn of life, one glances back to see the hills and valleys traversed and one moves on — a little older and wiser.

All these phases are essential in the individual’s continuing story. It is the pilgrim’s journey to wholeness, self- integration, and a spiritual goal.

Here is a thought-provoking poem on discernment and acceptance. “After a while you learn The subtle difference Between holding a hand And claiming a soul. That love doesn’t mean leaning

And company doesn’t mean security. And you begin to learn That kisses aren’t compromises And presents aren’t promises. And you begin to accept your defeats

With your head up and your eyes ahead

With the grace of a woman or man Not the grief of a child. And you learn to build all your loads on today

Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans

And futures have a way of falling in midflight. After a while you learn That even sunshine burns when you ask too much.

So plant your garden And decorate your own soul Instead of waiting for someone to buy you flowers. And you learn That you can really endure That you are really strong And you really do have worth. And you learn. — Anonymous
