La Salle targets to pad UAAP card vs Adamson

- By Michael Angelo S. Murillo Reporter

FOLLOWING an impressive bounce-back win in their last outing, the De La Salle Lady Spikers look to improve their card in the ongoing UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament when they return to the court today against the Adamson Lady Falcons.

Set for 4 p. m. at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City, the defending champions Lady Spikers ( 3- 1) are out to build on their straight-sets win over erstwhile undefeated National University Bulldogs (3-1) last Sunday by making it two consecutive victories in their meeting with the still- winless Lady Falcons (0-4).

Rocked by the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons (4-0) previously, La Salle played more with a sense of urgency and focus against NU in hacking out the 29-27, 25-16 and 25-21 win.

Opposite hitter Tin Tiamzon was the top- scorer for La Salle with 17 points, 12 off spikes and three blocks, while Aduke Ogunsanya had 11.

Setter Kim Fajardo had 41 excellent sets for the Lady Spikers.

Looking to halt the Lady Spikers while also giving their cause a boost are the Lady Falcons, one of two teams still winless in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball tournament to date, along with the University of the East Lady Warriors (0-4).

The latest of Adamson’s defeats came at the hands of the Ateneo Lady Eagles ( 3- 1) last Saturday where they slumped, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-13.

In said game, Jema Galanza had a team-high eight points for Adamson followed by Fatima Joaquin’s seven points and Bernadette Flora’s six.

The Lady Falcons have pointed to “on- court chemistry” as still an issue that has been impeding their progress in the ongoing season but it is something they hope to overcome in their future games under American coach Airess Padda.

Serving as appetizer for UAAP women’s volleyball games today is the 2 p. m. battle between Ateneo and UE.

The Lady Eagles, last year’s losing finalist, will welcome back head coach Tai Bundit, who missed Ateneo’s last two games for personal reasons.

Assistant Sherwin Meneses held the fort well sans Mr. Bundit, leading Ateneo to back- toback wins.

UE, meanwhile, comes into the contest fresh from a spirited outing in their previous game against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws where they extended things before bowing out, 25-18, 25- 22, 25- 27 and 25-11.

Opposite hitter Shaya Adorador bounced back from her one- point output in the previous outing with 12 hits, but her efforts were not enough to help UE get its first win of the season.
