FEU’s Pons continues ascent in UAAP scoring charts
FAR EASTERN University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws outside hitter Bernadeth Pons fortified her hold of second spot in scoring in Season 79 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball tournament just as the first round of eliminations drew to a close.
In latest numbers released by the league, Pons is the league’s second-best scorer with 118 points in seven games, or an average of 16.9 points per game, behind only leader Jaja Santiago of National University (NU) with 128 points (18.3 points).
Pons, however, was able to narrow the gap between her and Santiago from the 15-point distance posted last week.
Of Pons’s 118 points, 106 were off spikes, five blocks and seven service aces.
The continued ascent of Pons also comes as her FEU team is slowly creeping its way up after a slow start, and is now in the mix for the final four race with a 4-3 record, joint third with three other teams.
Also on the rise is University of the Philippines (UP) stalwart Tots Carlos, who is at third place with 105 points (15 points) and leapt two places up from a week ago.
Running fourth is Ateneo University’s Michelle Morente with 97 points while at fifth is EJ Laure of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) with 94 points.
Rounding out the top 10 are CC Rondina of UST with 91 points, La Salle’s Kim Dy (87), University of the East’s Shaya Adorador ( 80), FEU’s ChinChin Basas (77) and La Salle’s Mary Joy Baron, Ateneo’s Jhoana Maraguinot and UP’s Nicole Tiamzon (71).
BEST SETTER
Best setter, meanwhile, at the halfway mark of the tournament is Ateneo’s Jia Morado, who is averaging 13.32 sets per frame.
Second is La Salle’s Kim Fajardo with a 13.1 average, followed by UP’s Ayel Estranero (11.5), NU’s Jasmine Nabor ( 11.2) and FEU’s Angel Cayuna (7.7).
Ateneo’s Morente is the best spiker to date with an efficiency rate of 41.3% followed by NU’s Santiago (40.1%), La Salle’s Baron (38.3%), Ateneo’s Kat Tolentino (37.1%) and La Salle’s Dy (35.3%). —
