Magnaye, Morada, Leonardo and Pomar retain doubles titles

DEFENDING champions Peter Gabriel Magnaye and Alvin Morada and Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo and Thea Marie Pomar retained their respective titles in the doubles open classes of 10th Prima Pasta Badminton Championsh­ip recently at the Powersmash Courts in Makati City.

Magnaye and Morada scored their second straight men’s open doubles title by outplaying fellow national team Anton Cayanan and Joper Philip Escueta, 21-18, 20-22, 21-17, in the finals of the annual competitio­n organized by Prima Pasta Chairman Alex Lim.

Leonardo and Pomar, also both members of the Philippine team, nipped Joella Geva Ramos Devera and Aires Amor Montilla, 21-19, 21-19, to keep the women’s doubles open crown during the competitio­n sponsored by Smart Communicat­ions and Babolat.

The event was supported by Boysen Paints, Morning Star Milling Corporatio­n., Mabz Builders, ILO Constructi­on, Monolith Constructi­on, Monocrete Constructi­on, Pioneer Insurance, Promax Internatio­nal, Regent Foods Corp., Sunkist drinks and Del Monte Phils.

The event was also backed by Amstar, Gardenia, Greenshade­s Garden resorts, Herbalife, Jose Siao Ling & Associates, Mega Subic Terminal Services, Inc., Ric Airtech, Sincere Constructi­on, U2 Electrical, United Colourtech, Wl-An Aluminium, Window One, Waterlite Engineerin­g and Unitech Industrial Sales.

In other doubles finals results, Kevin Llanes and Nestorjan Tapales bashed Munir Bartolome and Rey Angelo Pedron, 21-9, 18-21, 21-15, to secure the boys’ doubles 15-under title while Anthea Marie Gonzales and Angel Valle beat Clara Sofia Ignacio and Nina Pantig, 21-4, 21-4, to capture the girls’ 15-under title.

Jeno Carino and Kurt Vincent Maghirang beat Agustin Alvarez and Ralph Batalon, 21-19, 21-19, for the boys’ doubles under-17 trophy, while Anthea Marie Gonzales and Mica Ibong toppled Palma Assumpta Cruz and Alexis Nicole Santos, 21-11, 21-7, for the girls’ 17-under diadem.

John Matthew Bernardo and Michael Adrian Clemente bested Estarco Bacalso and Bless Linaban, 21-15, 21-13, to win the boys’ doubles Under-19 crown, while Mikaela Joy De Guzman and Chanelle Lunod battered Andrea Abalos and Dennise Silva, 21-3, 21-14, for the girls’ 19-under trophy.

Over 2,000 participan­ts all over the country joined the weeklong tournament in partnershi­p with the Philippine Badminton Associatio­n (PBA) and affiliated with the Philippine National Ranking System (PNRS).

Christian Bernardo and Emilio Mangubat of Ateneo crushed Jerome Pechera and John Edgar Reyes, 21-11, 21-16, to cop the men’s doubles level A title, while Ruben Haramel and Johnrick Macabenta whacked Tim Alvar and Larry Valerio, 21-19, 24-22, to grab the men’s doubles C trophy.

Cyril Gloria and Ted Zulueta outsmarted Kim Santos and Athanacius Gallardo, 21-9, 21-10, to bag the men’s doubles E crown, while Connie Recio and Graciella Etis downed Jackie Lyn Pana and Rona Jane Panisales, 21-17, 21-15, to clinch the women’s doubles E crown.

Jeya Von Pinlac and Zyrish Camba blanked Steffie Aquino and Connie Recio, 21-14, 21-14, to take home the women’s doubles C crown.
