Artists panel at Ligalig exhibit lecture

ON THE panel for this week’s ArtSpeak, which will be held on March 23, 3:30 p.m., are the featured artists in the ongoing exhibit Ligalig: Art in a Time of Turmoil. Virgilio Aviado, Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Jose Tence Ruiz and Pablo Baen Santos will talk about their works in the show and art and its response to political unrest. Joining them are special guests Pete Lacaba, who will have a poetry reading and share his experiences in now-defunct Arts Club in Ateneo, and Lisa Ito of Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP). Ligalig: Art in a Time

of Turmoil features works donated during the time of Martial Law to the growing university art collection at the invitation of Emmanuel Torres, first AAG Curator. These included artists whose works depicted the precarious conditions under the Marcos dictatorship. These works are shown along with other social realist works acquired in the recent years. The range of artworks, from paintings, prints, and drawings to mixed media and video works, reveals how contemporary artists are vigilant and responsive to current issues, underscoring the role of art as a critique of the prevailing social and political order. Limited seats for ArtSpeak are available. For reservations, e-mail aag@ateneo.edu or call 426-6488 and look for Tricia Raya.
