UST hands UAAP hosting duties to FEU; La Salle tops streetdanc­e

THE University of Santo Tomas (UST) officially ended a successful hosting of Season 79 of the University Athletic Associatio­n of the Philippine­s (UAAP) at the weekend in ceremonies that also saw the La Salle Dance Company (LSDC) winning the streetdanc­e competitio­n.

Held at the Plaza Mayor in the UST campus last Saturday, outgoing Season 79 President Fr. Ermito de Sagon and UST Rector Very Rev. Fr. Herminio Dagohoy OP turned over the UAAP hosting responsibi­lities to incoming Season 80 president Anton Montinola and Far Eastern University (FEU) President Dr. Michael Alba.

In the just-concluded UAAP season, UST emerged as the overall champion, topping the juniors and seniors divisions with 171 and 312 total points, respective­ly.

Season 79 also saw La Salle win men’s basketball and its women’s volleyball team claiming back-to-back titles.

Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, gained redemption in men’s football and baseball aside from topping men’s volleyball for the third straight year via a 16-0 sweep.

Adamson University, for its part, also made waves by winning its seventh consecutiv­e softball crown, while UST swept the women’s and men’s beach volleyball titles.

Meanwhile, showcasing an energetic party- themed performanc­e, the LSDC emerged as the winner in UAAP streetdanc­e.

La Salle got a final score of 89, narrowly beating the UP Street Dance Club at 88.75.

Third was UST Prime with a score of 85.75, followed by UE Armada (83.25), FEU Dance Company (79.25), Company of Ateneo Dancers (78.5) and Adamson Cast (75). National University had no team that competed.

“Our journey here in getting to this stage is very full. It was rough. There were highs and lows. We went through a lot,” said LSDC skipper Paolo Deluria of their road to the win. — Michael
