Rio Olympic Games silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz shows school spirit
TAKING up school anew after her silver medal-winning showing at last year’s Rio Olympic Games, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz is rallying behind efforts by her alma mater, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, to further its sports program.
Ms. Diaz is set to participate in the “Green Fun Racers 2.0” of DLS-CSB on Saturday, May 28 at the La Mesa Nature Reserve. The event is a hike and bike fund-raiser for the benefit of the school’s student athlete-scholars.
A Business Management student at DLS- CSB, Zamboanga native Diaz’s participation in the event is her form of encouraging her fellow studentathletes and inspiring them to better themselves.
“I said to myself that being an athlete is not forever and that I have to have a college degree. I already won a silver medal but I don’t want things to stop for me there. I don’t want to end up like other athletes who fell into rough times after their careers came to an end. This is an opportunity to gain new learnings, to get a college degree.
Assembly time for Green Fun Racers 2.0 is at 5 a.m., while the gun start is at 6 a.m.
Categories of the event include a 9- km. hike for participants as young as 10 years old; 15-km. bike and 20-km. bike for cyclists 15 years and above.
It is open to the general public. Participants who are minors are required to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for the duration of their challenge.
Registration fees are pegged at P800 for 9- km. hike, P1,000 for 15- km. bike, and P1,200 for 20-km. bike.
The event is made possible with the support of the La Mesa Nature Reserve, Trampoline Park, Toby’s Sports, Bo’s Coffee and with the assistance of Regent Foods Corp., Mondelez Philippines, the Primer Group of Companies, Smart Communications, Inc. and Gatorade. —
