Larry Fonacier to undergo operation on left foot as NLEX taps Mexican League star for Govs’ Cup

- Rey Joble

NEWLY acquired NLEX player Larry Fonacier has missed his first game in a reunion with former coach Yeng Guiao last week.

That’s because the veteran swingman underwent operation to remove bone spurs on his left foot.

With the Road Warriors already eliminated in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup, Mr. Guiao advised his long-time ward to underwent surgery.

“We’re already out, so this is the best time for him to undergo operation. It’s an old injury he got when he was still playing for TNT. It’s playable, but has been nagging him. I told him to take the operation now so he could go back and play for the third conference,” Mr. Guiao told BusinessWorld.

Mr. Fonacier is one of the three players acquired recently by the Road Warriors. He was a long-time player of Mr. Guiao, having won together a championship with Red Bull in the 2005-2006 Fiesta Conference.

The 6- foot-3 Fonacier, center JR Quiñahan, another veteran player of Mr. Guiao, and shifty guard Alex Mallari provided the Road Warriors the depth they needed in three key positions.

Mr. Guiao said they’re not done yet tinkering their lineup. They’ve made a move to get another old reliable in Cyrus Baguio, but the deal didn’t push through. The fiery mentor said the deal is still on the table, but would not force it if it’s not beneficial for both teams.

Mr. Baguio is currently playing for Phoenix.

This developed as NLEX was forced to find a new import for the Governors’ Cup after failing to secure the services of Wendell McKines.

Mr. McKines, who played for Guiao with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters two seasons ago, has been in contact with the Road Warriors, but decided to take a deal with San Miguel Beer instead, forcing NLEX to get Aaron Fuller instead.

Mr. Fuller has just won a championship in Mexico while playing for Fuerza Regia. —
