Volvo V90 Cross Country:
The sophisticated adventurer rolls onto Philippine roads
The eagerly awaited Volvo V90 Cross Country has finally come to the Philippines, completing the lineup of Volvos’ impressive 90 Series cars.
On June 9, Volvo Philippines proudly introduced the sophisticatedly adventurous V90 Cross Country at the North Court of the Power Plant Mall, Makati City. Flanked by its equally remarkable siblings — the Volvo S90 and XC90 — Volvo’s latest addition is a Swedish luxury estate, confirming Volvo’s leadership in the Cross Country segment. A RICH, CLASS-LEADING HERITAGE Since the introduction of the first Cross Country almost 20 years ago, Volvo cars have become synonymous with the rugged all-road, all-weather product category, with a growing stable of Cross Country models.
Instrumental to defining the Cross Country segment, Volvo clearly cements its leadership role in providing the most capable and comfortable premium offroader with the Volvo V90.
“Cross Country has become a true expression of a Volvo car in may people’s eyes. It was a winning concept from the start, perfect for the tough climate and road conditions that we experience in Sweden,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group. THE LUXURY OF SPACE The V90 Cross Country’s rugged character belies a sumptuous interior that delivers a level of luxury uncommon in the segment, combining all the benefits of the connectivity and entertainment features that were launched with the new S90 and V90.
“The modern premium estate is all about the intriguing combination of a luxurious experience with the functional origins of the estate’s silhouette. The sophisticated ambience of our new Volvo interiors is combined with a great cargo space, providing the right kind of functionality — whether through connectivity or cargo and storage solutions,” quips Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice-President, Design, at Volvo Car Group.
The V90 Cross Country’s exterior design cues communicate the powerful and dynamic capability that the car exemplifies, while offering the flexibility to choose from both rugged and elegant expressions. HALLMARK OF AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE The new V90 Cross Country is the perfect addition to an active, adventurous lifestyle with its exceptional versatility and comfort- able, engaging drive. Crafted with natural materials, the luxurious, spacious interior adds a real sense of status, style and sophistication, and makes the new V90 Cross Country the ideal car for work and pleasure. RUGGED, YET ELEGANT Volvo designers took their inspiration for the distinctive grille and headlights from the celebrated Volvo Concept Estate, unveiled in 2014. The upright grille, high belt line, large wheels, panoramic roof and LED headlights exude self-confidence and project a distinctive Volvo identity. The new V90 Cross Country also features classic Volvo styling cues, such as the strong shoulders that run back to the rear of the car. A LUXURIOUS, LOUNGE-LIKE INTERIOR The interior design of the new V90 Cross Country was guided by three principles: proportion, intelligent use of technology and the Scandinavian approach to luxury.
The lines of the interior are stretched horizontally, creating a feeling of width and space and the proportions of a luxurious cabin. By replacing switches and buttons with a touchscreen, we have created a cabin that feels spacious and uncluttered.
From premium, handcrafted materials to the richness of its premium audio, the interior design of the new V90 Cross Country reflects market-leading levels of elegance and sophistication.
The way we use wood is a perfect example of our attention to detail. Black Walnut is made from hand-selected panels. These timbers are unique to Volvo Cars and set the new V90 Cross Country apart, with the distinctive Scandinavian design coming to life in a light filled cabin.
The air vent controls are inspired by our concept cars. SCALABLE PRODUCT ARCHITECTURE “Our cars are well known for their safety, strength and durability. With All-Wheel Drive, increased ride height, and a chassis optimized for comfort and control in all weather and road conditions, the new V90 Cross Country takes our versatile V90 estate and adds the heart of an explorer,” said Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice-President Research & Development at Volvo Cars.
With Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture providing the underpinnings, the V90 Cross Country has undergone rigorous testing to ensure that it can survive the extremes in which it will ultimately find itself. GROUND CLEARANCE One of the key differentiating factors of Cross Country models is increased ground clearance. Designed to enable off-road capability in all seasons, The V90 Cross Country has been raised by 65 millimeters when compared to the V90. This increased approach and departure angle helps to protect the front and rear in steep slopes and on uneven surfaces. DRIVE-E: POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGY Volvo’s Drive-E powertrains provide low emissions and excellent fuel economy.
With an efficient four-cylinder engine, every drop of fuel that’s put into the V90 Cross Country works harder while its lightweight all-aluminum construction reduces the car’s overall weight and helps to improve handling.
Locally, the V90 Cross Country will initially be available with an 8-speed AWD, 2.0L in-line 4-cylinder twin turbo diesel spewing 235hp | 4000 rpm and 480Nm of torque at 1750-2250 rpm. POWERPULSE With PowerPulse, Volvo Cars has developed an innovative way of delivering instant turbo response in diesel engines providing a distinct performance feel that many car makers struggle to achieve in their diesel variants.
PowerPulse works by drawing air from the air filter via a compressor to a pressurized two-liter air tank. When the driver wishes to accelerate quickly during launch and during low-speed driving, the air is fed by a valve into the exhaust manifold to feed the turbo. This has the effect of delivering a quick and responsive pulse of power. The air in the tank is topped-up automatically, making sure that PowerPulse is always ready to deliver a new boost.
Volvo Cars is the only car maker currently using such technology in production cars. ALL-WHEEL DRIVE The V90 Cross Country’s all-wheel drive uses a compact and lightweight coupling to distribute the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels, giving the car true go-anywhere capability.
In dry conditions, practically all of the power goes to the front wheels. But the system constantly calculates the need for power to the rear wheels and can instantly redistribute up to 50% of the engine’s power. This efficient distribution of power means that all-wheel drive variants of the new V90 Cross Country have lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions than more traditional types of four-wheel drive. SENSUS TECHNOLOGY Volvo’s Sensus technology intuitively connects drivers with the world around them, while allowing them to stay focused on driving. Whether it’s entertainment, information or navigation, everything they need is delivered seamlessly with Sensus.
The user interface is focused around a touchscreen, driver display and steering wheel controls. Volvo also made as many functions as possible work with a voice control system that uses natural speech to operate.
With Sensus Connect, your Volvo is technologically prepared for coming Web and cloud-based in-car infotainment functions. SMARTPHONE INTEGRATION Both Smartphone Integration and Android Auto have specially developed in-car interfaces for the center display, a USB connection for charging, and easy-to-use voice commands — so drivers will stay safe and in control in their mobile office. INTELLISAFE: SAFETY INNOVATIONS Drivers of the new V90 Cross Country benefit from a very high level of safety — supportive, protective and preventive. We call this approach IntelliSafe, which comprises a whole suite of intuitive and innovative technologies designed to support and protect drivers, their passengers and the world around them.
“The best way to think of IntelliSafe is like having a co-pilot who’s always looking out for danger and is ready to intervene if necessary. The idea is that as the driver, you don’t have to switch on or activate anything — IntelliSafe is there to help protect you,” shares Martin Magnusson, Senior Safety Engineer at Volvo Cars. PILOT ASSIST Volvo’s latest generation of Pilot Assist automatically maintains a set speed or distance to the car in front, as well as giving gentle steering inputs to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings. The driver can override the system at any time, and Pilot Assist will be switched off if the driver does not keep a hand on the steering wheel. PARK ASSIST PILOT Park Assist Pilot can help to reduce your business’ insurance and repair costs by avoiding costly parking mishaps. It will park the new V90 Cross Country in a space that is perpendicular or parallel to the car. All the driver has to do is select drive or reverse and brake according to the screen prompts. The car does the rest, with the ability to parallel park in a space just 1.2 times the length of the car. CLEANZONE TECHNOLOGY Volvo’s award-winning CleanZone technology filters the incoming air to remove pollutants and odors, making the in-car experience as pleasant as possible.
CleanZone monitors the air entering the car’s cabin, filtering the air or closing the exterior intakes completely. It detects and improves pollen, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, ground-level ozone, gases and other unpleasant odors.
Every time the new V90 Cross Country is unlocked, the cabin air is automatically evacuated and replaced giving you and your loved ones fresher air.
