Global Cebu FC routs Ilocos United, 3-0

- Michael Angelo S. Murillo

GLOBAL Cebu FC had a successful trek up north last Sunday, beating host Ilocos United FC, 3-0, in Philippines Football League (PFL) action to move up to third spot after five games with a 3-1-1 record and 10 points.

Exploding with three first-half goals, two coming from forward Shu Sasaki, the visiting side pushed the hosts too deep in the hole from which they could not recover from.

Midfielder Paul Mulders started the scoring parade for Global, connecting in the 23rd minute of the match.

Mr. Sasaki then elevated things for his team as he nailed the first of his two goals in the 25th minute before completing his brace five minutes later.

From there, Global spent the rest of the match fending off the challenge of Ilocos in front of the latter’s home crowd at the Elpidio Quirino Stadium in Bantay.

At 10 points right now, Global is behind league leader FC Meralco Manila (50-0) by five points and second-running JPV Marikina (4-0-2) by two.

With the loss, Ilocos United dropped to 0-1-4 and currently at last place in the eight-team field with a point to show for.

“We caught a break in the first half but in the second half our opponent played well and organized. They kept pressing and I commend them for that,” said Global Marjo Allado in the post- match press conference.

“We just kept playing. We worked hard and worked together. We were up early and just continued with it, doing our job. It’s a total team effort,” player of the match Sasaki, for his part, said.

Global next plays JPV Marikina in a key match on June 25 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Meanwhile, in the other Sunday fixture, Davao Aguilas FC and Stallion Laguna FC fought to a goalless draw in Biñan.

They both got a point each to share sixth place with two points each and identical records of 0-2-3. —
