TODAY is a red-letter day for the skateboarding community as it celebrates “Go Skateboarding Day,” an annual event that is aimed at further promoting the sport and the lifestyle around the world.

Locally, DC, a leading global brand for skateboarding and action sports lifestyle footwear and apparels, is spearheading a big gathering of skateboarders to celebrate the important day, highlighted by an attempt to enter the Guinness World Records for the largest skateboarding parade.

Joining in the celebration are DC international athletes Cyril Jackson and Chase Webb of the United States and Alex Lawton of Australia, who all expressed excitement over the local celebration and seeing how it is further testament to the continued growth that skateboarding is experiencing across the world.

“It’s great and I’m happy to be part of it (celebration). It’s been endless for skateboarding and it keeps getting bigger and bigger and it’s really amazing how the sport is growing. What will happen on Wednesday is another example of that. And I’m really intrigue of what’s going to happen for skateboarding in the future,” said Mr. Lawton during the press conference for the event held Monday night at the DC Store in Megamall.

The athletes went on to say that skateboarding now being part of the Olympics starting in 2020 in Japan speaks of how far it has come from its days of being just something taken for fun and recreation.

“It’s cool that it is now part of the Olympics. It’s getting big either way,” said Mr. Webb.

“I’m excited about it being adopted in the Olympics,” Mr. Law- ton, for his part, said, adding, “But I don’t know what to expect yet. Definitely looking forward to it despite me not being in that kind of competition but it’s still skateboarding and I’m happy to see people who do that skateboarding having a chance to compete.”

They also encouraged people to pick up skateboarding even as a career if their passion lies in it, seeing how it has brought them “endless possibilities” and improved them as individuals.

PUSH PARADE

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the local celebration of Go Skateboarding Day, DC is organizing a massive Push Parade to break the current skateboarding parade record of 498 participants established in 2011 in Los Angeles, California.

Happening from the Quirino Grandstand to the Mountain Dew Skate Park in Circuit Makati, DC is attempting to gather 1,000 skateboarders to surpass the current world mark. The parade begins at 1 p.m.

Skaters who want to participate may do so online or on the day of the event at the Quirino Grandstand or at Circuit Makati. The first 1,000 people to register get a limited- edition DC x Grind T-shirt, stickers and other merchandise along with their numbered bib which serves as the official proof of DC’s head count.

After the skate parade, a skateboarding competition hosted by DC will take place at the Mountain Dew Skate Park. Competition categories include the DC Invitational, Highest Ollie, Longest Gap, Best Grind and Skate Submit, a contest that will give an award to the skater with the best trick video.

Cash and DC products await the winners of the different competitions.
