8 Spatial Davao embarks on coastal cleaning & greening
8 Spatial Davao of Futura Homes, the value homes division of Filinvest, a mid-rise, and secured condo community has once again fulfilled its commitment to protect the environment as its employees, together with Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), participated in the mangroves planting and coastal cleaning activity in Sitio Malamboon, Bucana, Davao City.
“We have chosen this project knowing the importance of mangroves in our coastal and marine ecosystem. Mangroves not only provide nursery grounds and food for fish and other sea creatures, they also protect coastal communities from storm surges and currents. That is what we aim to achieve here, to help protect the coastal ecosystem and the community living around it,” Tristan Las Marias, Filinvest Senior Vice President for VisMin cluster said during an interview.
According to City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Vincent Calatrava, at least 5,000 mangroves are still needed to rehabilitate the mangrove forest in the said area. “We still have a long way to go in rehabilitating this mangrove forest and we are thankful for projects like this that help the environment,” Calatrava added. Filinvest has planted almost a thousand mangroves in a 900 square meter coastal area since it started its project last year as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
Las Marias added however, that the other challenge aside from mangrove reforestation is preventing the garbage from upland communities from traversing through the tributary river. “These garbage end up in the mangrove forest and destroy the young mangroves. We would like to remind everyone to take care of our environment,” he said.
Las Marias ended by encouraging other communities and companies to join in environmental activities such as mangrove reforestation. “8 Spatial Davao looks forward to next year’s mangrove planting activity. We aim to cover a bigger area and have more participants from other stakeholders as well.”
