Davao Aguilas take on Global Cebu FC in Tagum

- Michael Angelo S. Murillo

SAN MIGUEL Davao Aguilas FC plays its third straight game on its home turf in Tagum City today, taking on visiting Global Cebu FC in midweek action at the Philippines Football League (PFL).

Playing their third game in two weeks at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex, the Aguilas, currently sixth place in the standings with a 0-4-3 record and four points, look to get their first-ever full three points in the PFL in their scheduled 4 p.m. encounter with Global.

In its previous two games in front of its home town fans, Davao only got two points following a pair of draws with FC Meralco Manila, 2-2, on June 21 and with Ilocos United FC, 0-0, on June 25.

And including their 0-0 stalemate with Stallion Laguna FC on June 18 in Biñan, the Aguilas have been held to three consecutive draws.

While they are not completely looking down on themselves with the campaign they are having so far, still the Aguilas are hoping that the gates would finally open for them in terms of winning consistently.

“It has been a frustrating campaign so far as we are putting ourselves in positions to win but cannot finish them. But we have to go over it and just press on,” Davao coach Gary Philips was quoted as saying during their series of draw results.

Looking to add to the frustration of Davao and prevent it from breaking through is Global, itself angling to establish some consistency amid an “up and down” campaign in the national football league to date.

Currently third running with 10 points off a record of 3-1-2 in six games, Global tries to make up for lost ground, including the recent loss it absorbed at the hands of now-league leading JPV Marikina FC, 2-1, last Sunday.

Against JPV, Global fell behind early and played catch-up most of the way. It was able to come within one point at the 69th minute after a Sekou Sylla goal off the corner. But that was the closest it would get before slumping to its second defeat of the season.

“We have to adjust one step at a time. It’s a long process,” said new Global coach Akbar Nawas after their game against JPV.

Tickets for the Davao AguilasGlobal Cebu match are available at the stadium.

Meanwhile, also playing today at the Panaad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City are Ceres- Negros FC and Stallion Laguna.

Host Ceres ( 2- 1- 1) is coming off a 3-1 win over Kaya FCMakati while Stallion ( 0- 3- 3) drew, 1-1, with Meralco Manila previously. —
