LTFRB to Uber: Stop ‘surcharge’ on trips via tollways
THE LAND Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) asked Uber Philippines (Uber Systems, Inc.) to stop imposing a surcharge on routes that will pass through certain tollways.
“Uber is directed not to implement this ‘surcharge’ but instead file its position paper on the matter for the Board’s deliberation and consideration,” the LTFRB said on Thursday in a statement.
Uber had previously announced that it will implement surcharges starting Dec. 7, on top of the fare and toll fees, if an Uber vehicle passes through the entry points of Skyway, Magallanes, and C- 5 and exit points of Bicutan and Sucat ( P80), and exit points of Alabang, Filinvest and Susana Heights ( P100).
Uber said the surcharge is to cover costs of partner-drivers.
“As we see more riders interested in using Uber in the southern part of the metro, we want to make sure that partner- drivers are able to cover for their costs in a sustainable manner,” the ridesharing service said.
Sought for comment, Uber said they have submitted a position paper on Sept. 26.
“Surcharges were put in place in December 2016 to ensure that drivers are fairly compensated for trips to lower demand areas. We thank the LTFRB for accommodating our position paper and look forward to working with the Board on this matter,” Uber said.
LTFRB Board Member Aileen Lourdes A. Lizada confirmed through text message that the LTFRB has received the position paper of Uber.
“[ We] will set [a] hearing,” Ms. Lizada said. —
