Maynilad to construct P6.75-billion water treatment plant in Muntinlupa
WEST Zone water concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) will be setting up a new water treatment plant worth P6.75 billion in Muntinlupa which is expected to be operational by May.
In a statement on Monday, Maynilad said the Putatan Water Treatment Plant 2 will increase the West Zone concession’s output by 150 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water to serve 1.2 million in Muntinlupa, Las Piñas and Cavite. The plant will deploy technologies such as Dissolved Air Flotation and Biological Activated Filtration systems to eliminate manganese from the raw water sourced from Laguna de Bay.
Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez said that the construction of the new facility will improve the company’s services and sustain expansion. Mr. Fernandez has said that the target is no service interruptions by next year in the entire West Concession area.
The second Putatan plant, which will be Maynilad’s fourth water treatment facility, is part of the 2013-2017 capital expenditure plan worth P42 billion. For 2017, Maynilad has set capex at P13.2 billion.
“Climate change conditions have made the quality of raw water from Laguna Lake more variable, and this often forced us to reduce water output. With the enhanced treatment capacity of this new facility, we can keep our production stable and ensure 24-hour water supply at a stronger pressure of 16 psi (pounds per square inch) for our customers in the south,” Maynilad Chief Operating Officer Randolph T. Estrellado said.
In August, Maynilad said it will spend P7 billion to upgrade two La Mesa water treatment plants in Quezon City, which produce a total of 2,400 MLD.
Last month, Maynilad started the upgrade of the first Putatan Water Treatment plant which provides water to some parts of Metro Manila, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Parañaque and Cavite.
Maynilad produces 2,700 MLD for more than nine million customers in the West Zone, composed of parts of Metro Manila and the province of Cavite. —
