LTFRB to hold dialogue with Angkas drivers

- By Patrizia Paola C. Marcelo

THE LAND Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and legislators will hold a dialogue with Angkas drivers to “listen to their sentiments.”

This comes after authorities prevented a group of Angkas drivers offering free rides at an Metro Rail Transit Station.

LTFRB Board Member Aileen Lourdes A. Lizada said he has spoken with Ryan Rillera, president of the Taguig Spartan Group, which offered yesterday free rides at North Avenue station.

“I told Ryan, we have a pending dialogue on Dec. 12. We invited Cong. Sarmiento and Speaker Alvarez to listen to the sentiments of Angkas drivers,” Ms. Lizada told reporters in a message.

Earlier this month, authorities cracked down on the motorcycle-hailing service, apprehending 19 riders. The city government of Makati also ordered the closing of the company office, which was allegedly operating without a permit.

The LTFRB asserted that under Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, private motorcycles are not allowed to transport passengers.

Ms. Lizada said they will meet with legislators to address the problem in a “holistic” manner.

“We are just enforcing the law, that’s why we invited the Speaker... so we can solve the problem in a holistic manner,” Ms. Lizada said.

LTFRB previously said it will hold a job fair for Angkas riders who have lost their jobs given the closing of Angkas.

“That’s the best effort the government can do, offer while we await legislation.”
