“We are investigating the claims about Crimson Hexagon to see if they violated any of our policies,” he said. “People can share their information with developers on Facebook and Instagram — just as they can when they download an app on their phone. We also have APIs [ application programming interfaces] so that developers can use public or aggregated information to produce anonymized insights for business purposes.”
Facebook has suspended several data analytics firms since the revelation in March that Cambridge Analytica, a company that worked for the Trump campaign, had obtained data on up to 87 million Facebook users in a massive data leak. In April, it suspended CubeYou, which collected data through personality quizzes and denied any wrongdoing.
It also suspended AggregateIQ, a Canadian political strategy company, for improperly accessing user data. Files seen by the Financial Times showed AggregateIQ had stored a list of more than 750,000 Facebook users.
Crimson Hexagon describes itself as an artificial intelligencepowered consumer insights company for brand managers, marketers and executives. The company says it has the world’s largest library of public social data, including over one trillion posts.
Its customers include Anheuser- Busch InBev, the brewer, the BBC, and Walmart. Twitter also works with Crimson Hexagon to analyze its own data.
On its website, the examples of its work include an interactive map of food in New York City based on Instagram data. It promises to identify and understand influencers that matter to brands, measure brand health, and to conduct competitive and trend analysis.
