The Joint Task Force COVID Shield (JTF CV Shield) on Wednesday said motorcycle riders have until Sunday to comply with the use of prescribed barriers for their back-riding spouses or common-law partners.

JTF CV Shield commander PLt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar stated that the grace period was approved by National Task Force Against COVID-19 (NTF COVID-19) chairman and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

He also reminded bike users that only the two approved designs submitted by the Bohol Provincial Government and ride-hailing company Angkas will be permitted.

Eleazar believes there is enough time for the motorcycle riders to comply with the order.

The move came following a series of consultations with Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) director, PBGen. Eliseo Cruz; Metropolitan Manila Development Authority General Manager, Jojo Garcia; and Angkas Chief Transport Advocate George Royeca.

“As per Secretary of the Interior and Local Government and NTF Against COVID-19 Vice Chairman Eduardo Año, we will continue monitoring and warning those without barrier while citing or apprehending those with other violations,” Eleazar said.

JTF CV Shield commander PLt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar stated that the grace period was approved by National Task Force Against COVID-19 chairman and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

PNP Chief, PGen. Archie Gamboa had also been briefed about the development and tasked ground commanders to disseminate the information to personnel manning Quarantine Control Points regarding its full implementation on 20 July.

The NTF COVID-19 approved pillion-riding on motorcycles for married and common-law partners to help alleviate the plight of commuters amid the still limited mass transportation during the community quarantine.

Eleazar urged all motorcycle riders to strictly follow the approved designs to avoid penalty. They are also for their safety as well as those of the pillion riders.

Apart from the barriers, back-riding couples must also present proof of marriage or if they are living under the same roof.

“The set of rules for motorcycle back-riding is a balance between safety and the necessity of transportation. Our motorists have long requested for this and now that it was finally granted, please do not abuse it,” stated the police official.
