Eastern Visayas cases rise again

PALO, Leyte — Eastern Visayas breached the 1,000 mark after five days of new cases outnumbere­d Covid-19 recoveries,

The Department of Health regional office reported that active cases in the region on Saturday increased to 1,052 from 822 active cases last 18 January. Nine patients also died due to the viral infection within the period.

Leyte province recorded the most number at 62 new cases, 14 in Ormoc City, 11 in Samar, 10 in Eastern Samar, 10 in Tacloban City, five in Southern Leyte and one in Northern Samar. No new case was reported in Biliran province.

A total of 111 new cases were recorded out of 1,188 laboratory samples tested in the three Covid-19 laboratori­es in the region while only 34 recoveries were reported on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez said the city is ready to allocate up to P400 million to procure Covid-19 vaccines.

The Tacloban City Health Office is targeting 89,000 city residents for inoculatio­n when the national immunizati­on program starts.

City Health Officer Gloria Fabrigas said the city government will need more than 200 vaccinator­s to be deployed to different vaccinatio­n areas, mostly hospitals. These vaccinator­s could give the vaccines to 75-100 people per day, she added.
