Kai Sotto’s status remains uncertain when Gilas Pilipinas sees action in the 10th King Abdullah Cup from 25 July to 3 August in Amman, Jordan. Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) special assistant to the president Ryan Gregorio said the 19-year old slotman’s status is still hanging while the team ramps up its preparations for the FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta next month. Gregorio said the SBP is having discussions with Sotto’s management to secure his availability and avoid any conflict on his plans with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League. “Discussions about Kai Sotto’s availability for the King Abdullah Cup and the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 are currently ongoing between his management team and the SBP,” Gregorio said in a statement.

“It’s still a 50-50 chance for us. But we will see.”

Sotto is expected to banner the 19-man pool that will be heading to Jordan to get some exposure against teams from the Middle East in the invitational tourney.

Aside from fellow Asia Cup-bound and host nation Jordan, other countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Tunisia had already confirmed their participation in the tournament.

Reports have it that other European teams such as Russia, Greece and Serbia were also invited, but yet to confirm their attendance.

For Gregorio, the competition will definitely be a big help for the young squad as they will be facing stronger and more seasoned teams before seeing action in Jakarta.

We have full confidence that Gilas will take this opportunity to learn and jell as a unit.

“Jordan has always been one of the better teams in Asia so going up against them should be beneficial for our young squad.” “We’re also looking forward to going up against Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Tunisia.” Gilas have already rolled out their training at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna over the weekend and are expected to announce their departure from the country anytime soon. “When the SBP found out about this possibility, we jumped on it as we know every game played will be helpful towards our goal of building a competitive team not just for the FIBA Asia Cup but for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023,” Gregorio added.

“We have full confidence that Gilas will take this opportunity to learn and jell as a unit.”
