Can a Catholic woman agree to marry a Muslim man, be one of his three wives and be happy? That’s who Andrea Torres portrays as Diane San Luis, the Roman Catholic second wife of Dennis Trillo’s character, Ishmael, a member of Maranao Muslim royalty, in the coming drama series Legal Wives.
In a Zoom meet with media to announce her contract renewal as a GMA artist, Torres said the audience will learn to appreciate her character in the show. “You can love your partner but you also have to consider if it’s beneficial to him,” Torres said. “Your relationship must have a healthy balance. That’s the lesson people will learn from Diane.”
Torres, 31, said that camaraderie, obedience and being “a ray of sunshine” have enriched her as a Kapuso talent for the past 13 years.
For a change, she expressed a desire to play a ‘simple’ character: ‘Someone who is kind of low maintenance. Someone who doesn’t fix her hair, doesn’t wear makeup.’
“You have to know how to interact with people and not be a burden at work,” she said. “Aim to be everyone’s ray of sunshine. At the same time, respect the network and your work. If you love your job, it will reciprocate the love you give it.”
Asked if she ever thought of moving to another network, she proudly said no: “I’m amazed at the care and guidance GMA gives me. That’s not their job anymore yet they willingly give their support. It was humbling.”
Doing provocative, sexy roles led to more challenging projects, she said. “If it feels right for me or if everyone around me is telling me it’s worth a shot, then I go for it even if I’m not sure what will happen afterwards.”
How has the pandemic affected her?
“There were times when I doubted how I wanted to be seen as a person. But now, it’s clear to me what I’m able to do and what I can’t. I also feel stronger and that I can take on life’s challenges,” she said.
“When it comes to work, I’m more open to portray other roles. I’m surprised at how willing I am to do projects that I would initially turn down.”
