SMIC tapped over chip exports dev’t
The Philippines, a major exporter of computer chips, hopes to strengthen its niche in the overseas market through the infusion of Chinese technology.
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation or SMIC, based in Beijing, said it is willing to partner with the Philippines to promote the development of the communications technology sector and contribute to the digital transformation of the Philippines.
On 4 January 2023, Trade Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo led the business delegation in a site visit to the wafer fab facility of SMIC.
The visit happened on the sidelines of the three-day State Visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the People’s Republic of China,
The SMIC tour was arranged through FiberHome, a major Chinese networking and telecommunication equipment provider, which is a sister company of SMIC.
FiberHome expansion gains
FiberHome continues its expansion in the Philippines, which started in 2011. The company now has 14,967 Filipino employees (out of a total of 15,340), 110 offices, and 58 warehouses, with their Fiber To The Home systems and devices reaching about 10 million Filipino homes.
SMIC is one of the leading foundries in the world and the largest wafer fab business in China.
It is also considered as a frontrunner in the mainland on manufacturing capability, scale, and comprehensive service.
Wuhan FiberHome International Technologies Co. Ltd. Chairman Taurus Fan led in welcoming the Department of Trade and Industry representatives and members of the business delegation to Beijing.
Rodolfo thanked SMIC and FiberHome for opening the doors of its facilities to the Philippine delegation.
