MPD to deploy over 3K policemen during Lunar fest
The big celebration was a joint effort of the Manila LGU and Chinese business federation leaders who planned and agreed on all the programs
The Manila Police District is set to deploy 3,200 personnel to secure the Lunar New Year festivities in the city of Manila on Sunday, according to MPD director P/Brig. Gen. Andrei Dizon.
The MPD chief said that personnel would secure the activities to be held in Binondo, known for its thriving Filipino-Chinese community and said to be the world’s largest Chinatown.
In an interview with Daily Tribune, Dizon disclosed that the preparation had started on 18 January when it deployed uniformed cops along the busy district of Binondo Manila.
A formal send-off activity by the MPD was also done in at Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz on Wednesday afternoon while a blessing by priest were held as well as inspection of materials that will be used for the event.
To recall, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna had opened the rehabilitated Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arch in Binondo to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival or the “Mooncake Festival.”
The friendship arch is adorned with 800 bulbs. It is considered the world’s largest Chinatown Arch, which is 63.8 feet high and 74 feet wide, according to the city government’s public information office.
She also added that the local government will have a fireworks display at the newly-built Filipino-Chinese Friendship Bridge, a tied tied-arch bridge that can be found in Pasig River which connects Muelle de Binondo and San Nicolas at Solana Street, Riverside Drive at Intramuros.
The Manila mayor expressed gratitude to City Administrator Bernardo Ang for the support he got from the Chinese-Filipino businessmen.
