Topex Robinson will make a return to the collegiate ranks after De La Salle University tapped him as its head coach starting Season 86 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament.

In announcement, the Green Archers named the 48-year-old Robinson as its mentor who replaced seasoned tactician Derrick Pumaren, who failed to lead them to the Final Four last season.

Robinson has what it takes to lead the young La Salle squad back to the semifinals.

After retiring in the Philippine Basketball Association in 2011, Robinson handled San Sebastian College in the National Collegiate Athletic Association from Seasons 87 to 89 from 2011 to 2013.

With Robinson barking instructions at the sidelines, the Stags reached the finals in Season 87 and the Final Four in Season 89 with Jimbo Aquino, Brad Guinto, Leo de Vera and a young CJ Perez as players.

He joined Lyceum of the Philippines University the following year as head coach and chief of basketball operations, leading it to back-to-back finals appearances in Seasons 93 and 94.

All in all, he compiled a 98-68 record in the NCAA, enough to be elevated as head coach when Louie Alas and Phoenix Super LPG parted ways in 2020.

Now, he is bringing his brand of basketball to La Salle, which is hoping to regain its status as one of the heavy contenders in the UAAP.

“De La Salle University is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Christopher ‘Topex’ Robinson as head coach of the men’s basketball team effective today, 19 January 2023,” the Green Archers said.

“Prior to this post, Coach Topex coached the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters in the Philippine Basketball Association for three years. He also served as head coach of San Sebastian College Golden Stags and Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates in the NCAA.”

Aside from Robinson, Daily Tribune sources bared that the Green Archers also took a look at other prominent head coaches like Louie Alas, Cholo Villanueva and Serbian Rajko Toroman.

Robinson said he is honored to be chosen as the next La Salle mentor.

“I have played and coached against La Salle. Being part of La Salle is a dream come true,” Robinson said in a statement.

“I’m so grateful and honored to be in this situation. I myself growing up was a fan of La Salle basketball. Never have I imagined that this dream will come into fruition. It’s an honor and a privilege.”

The Green Archers added that it appreciates the effort done by Pumaren despite failing to lead La Salle to the finals in his two-year stint.

“La Salle extends its appreciation to former head coach Derrick Pumaren for his dedicated service to the Green Archers,” the school said.
