12 Iwahig prisoners released
The release of the PDLs is one of the programs of Remulla in order to decongest prison facilities nationwide
The Bureau of Corrections disclosed on Wednesday that at a total of 12 person deprived of liberty from its Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm were released this year which include four inmates recently freed during a culminating activity.
The Corrections bureau said that the released PDLs had amassed deductions on their sentences on the basis of good behavior and participation in reformation programs under the Good Conduct Time Allowance Law or Republic Act 10592.
To recall, the BuCor on 23 January released 340 inmates from across seven prison facilities in the country and it was also a simultaneous event which kicked off at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City and witnessed by Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and other key prison executives.
The release of the PDLs is one of the programs of Remulla in order to decongest prison facilities nationwide and the Justice secretary stressed that they are pushing for the regionalization of prison facilities and one of them is the building of a maximum security facility for 2,000 heinous crime convicts which would need about P4 billion.
The transfer of the inmates from the maximum security compound is to ensure that they should not be within the reach of other people.
With this, Remulla said the DoJ is coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways to finalize the details of the construction of the jail facility in Sablayan, Mindoro Occidental this year.
He added that they already have an agreement with the DPWH about the supermax jail and will finalize it as they work on the budget. The facility would be built in Sablayan, Mindoro Occidental for the 2,000 prisoners which the government will be spending P2 million per prisoner.
Remulla said that the DoJ is now working on the details, including the designs that he hoped to be implemented by the start of 2023 and for only one and a half years and they are targeting to do it in 18 months’ time.
