Jamie relishes PSA moment

Two-time Southeast Asian Games karate champion Jamie Lim is proud she and her father, the late Samboy Lim, were able to share the spotlight during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night last Monday at the Diamond Hotel in Manila.

Lim, who was joined by her mother, Atty. Darlene Berberabe, said she is proud she and Samboy both have two SEA Games mints with Samboy, someone who she grew up idolizing as a child.

The 26-year-old karateka was given a special citation for winning the Phnom Penh Games last May and received the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of his father, who passed away last December.

“It’s extraordinary because this is my second SEA Games gold as well and that’s what he got also a SEA Games gold,” Lim said.

“It’s a great honor and he’s my idol. He’s an amazing athlete, amazing person, and amazing father.”

The nine-time Philippine Basketball Association champion won two mints in 1983 in Singapore and 1985 in Bangkok while Jamie won the 2019 biennial meet in Manila in the women’s +61-kilogram division and 2023 in the women’s -61-kg division.

After finishing her Master’s Degree at the Imperial College Business School in London, Lim’s next focus is looking for a career where she could apply what she learned.

Despite this, she said she will continue honing her skills in karate with the Asian Championships happening this year.

“Actually, this year is a bit empty compared to last year because last year we had SEA Games and Asian Games. I think it’s a bit lighter but we do have the Asian Championships,” Lim said.

“I just finished my Master’s. I came back from London and I was on the dean’s list and represented the Philippines. But I’m gonna start to look for work. I’ve graduated in Math in my undergraduate studies and business analytics in my masteral so anything related to data science.”

Wherever he might be, Samboy is smiling.
