ALT Philippines, in its third edition and latest collaboration among nine progressive galleries who seek “to reframe the art show,” had a successful and well-attended preview on 21 February at
SMX 4 Mall of Asia Complex,
Pasay City.
The ALT Philippines Vernissage opened with great anticipation that gave way to a spectacular evening spent immersed with the best of Philippine contemporary art presented in a well-designed space — setting a breathtaking high standard for a massive group show.
This edition is extra special partly because of the involvement of B and C Design --Baby and Coco, who are celebrated experts in space design. The light mood is immediately evident due to the play of light and space and an energy of connectedness and oneness.
Gaby de la Merced of Vinyl on Vinyl says, “We wanted to make something really fresh and new. We worked with them and created this amazing space is something organic wherein you don’t feel the booth, it’s more fluid and you can see the art in a more seamless way.”
Artinformal’s Tina Fernandez adds, “They designed the space and because of this collaboration. It brought into being what ALT is all about — a group
exhibition of nine galleries with different points of view that are all progressive, and we all get along. “Ongoing were lively dialogues with the gallerists who organized the show, representing nine of the most important galleries in the country: Artinformal, Blanc, The Drawing Room, Finale Art File, Galleria Duemila, MO Space, Underground, West Gallery, and Vinyl on Vinyl.
Tina mentions, too, the ties that bind: “It’s a camaraderie among nine galleries who virtually grew up together in the art scene except for Duemila and Finale who were ahead of us. We also all have a strong sense of conviction about what art is.”
The exhibits were interspersed with astounding special projects mounted by critically acclaimed artists Juan Alcazaren, Geraldine Javier, Pete Jimenez and Oca Villameil. Boysen Paints sponsored a mural by Isabel Santos. A video room showcased moving image works curated by Cocoy Lumbao. A centrally located cafe that gives a glimpse of all the gallery spaces allowed for the most convenience in leisurely exploring art.
As the public days unfold from Friday to Sunday, 23 to 25 February, photographer Raena Abella will be accepting sitters for ambrotype portraits using the historical and magical wet plate collodion method.
Visitors are invited to join in an intimate “Conversations” program discussing topics that include New Media, Street Art, Moving Image, Female Artists, The Role of the Gallery and Diasporic Artists.
Art critic and educator Carlomar Arcangel Daoana will also be conducting daily tours in the afternoon.
Concept retail store Univers collaborated with six artists for a silent auction of unique bags, all proceeds of which will go to Action for the Care and Development of the Poor in the Philippines.
Philippine art is thriving and alive. We are at an age where everyone’s free to do what they want, but this doesn’t mean that we should take things for granted, give less respect or value.
Art is precious, should have resonance and meaning — that deep connection to you. As Mawen Ong of Mo Space ends, “What’s important is finding the Easter egg among all these amazing art pieces, the Easter egg that fits you as a person, collector and in your home. It’s something you will not let another person have.”
