Mentorque Productions will be uncovering the legend behind the mythical city of Biringan in a movie.

The production firm, which is behind the successful Metro Manila Film Festival 2023 entry Mallari, announced on Facebook on 10 March that it will present a “new cinematic masterpiece” through its upcoming film project.

“Our mission is to transcend the boundaries of traditional filmmaking. With the success of Mallari, we have learned so much and were able to export our vision and craftsmanship to the world,” Mentorque Productions president John Bryan Diamante stated in the post.

The goal is for the movie to allow viewers to be transported closer to Biringan and bring it to life on the big screen for the very first time. Biringan, which is believed to be found somewhere between the towns of Pagsanghan and Gandara in Samar province, has mystified generations with stories of supernatural occurrences.

Diamante added: “We’re delving deep into the heart of Philippine folklore to present a story that’s both universally appealing and deeply personal. It’s about exploring unknown worlds, but it’s also about the discovery of the self and the power of unseen forces that shape our lives.”

The Biringan project goes along the lines of Mallari, which delves into the enigmatic tale of the first Filipino serial killer. MMFF 2023’s Third Best Picture awardee and second top-grossing entry has a star-studded cast led by Piolo Pascual, Janella Salvador, JC Santos and Gloria Diaz. It is also the first successful mainstream Filipino film distributed by Warner Brothers.

The horror film also won the awards for Best Supporting Actor (for Santos), Best Musical Score and Best Production Design. Additionally, Pascual won Best Actor at the 2024 Manila International Film Festival held in Los Angeles, California.

Mentorque Productions prides itself to be a pioneering film production company with a strong commitment to upholding innovative storytelling and showcasing Philippine culture through meaningful and thought-provoking cinema on the global media landscape.

Details about its upcoming Biringan project, such as the creatives, cast members, production team, teaser trailers and release date, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
